Don't Forget to Pack: Waterproof Shoes, Rain Jacket, Light, Warm Layers, Chapstick

Eurotrip Day 8

Today was going to be a good day. I would be able to cross another item off of my bucket list by visiting the Palace of Versailles! Ever since my freshman year humanities class (which was really more of an art history class), I wanted to see the Hall of Mirrors and visit the gardens.

We booked a shuttle to transport us there and to 'skip the line'. Our guide picked us up at 8:00am sharp and we were off! He was friendly enough, and the sound of the metal pole scraping against the side of the van as he pulled into a much too narrow side street, didn't even phase him. It's really not as dramatic as it sounds. In Paris, these things happen and its apparently not so uncommon to just keep on keeping on instead of stopping to look at the damage and filing a report.

So, off we went and we arrived at the Palace as per scheduled. There wasn't much of a line to skip, yet, but it quickly became crowded inside. We collected our audio guides and jumped right into the tour.

I've visited the Biltmore in North Carolina a few times and I had kind of imagined the tour of the Palace of Versailles to be similar. The Hall of Mirrors was every bit as extraordinary as I had imagined it and the Royal Chapel was breathtaking.

Unfortunately, many of the rooms were closed and, before we knew it, we had seen everything there was to see inside. We wandered out onto the terrace over looking the gardens.

You could just see the Grand Canal in the distance, so we figured we had enough time to walk down and see it up close.

{Actually, we had intended to take a 'short cut' through the gardens to see Marie Antoinette's Estate and then walk back up, along the canal, to catch our ride home. However, the map they provided failed to indicate a locked gate within the maze of trees between us and the estate. So, we conceded and decided to have a snack by the canal instead.}

Accompanied by wood ducks, swan, and a few unreserved carp, we decided it was worth it to just be able to sit by the water and take in the scenery.

We arrived back in Paris around 1pm which was perfect because we still had time to see the inside of Notre Dame before it closed. We hopped on the Metro (which we had become quite good at navigating, if I do say so myself!) and headed over to the island again.

The Notre Dame Cathedral is a must see. I have never seen stained glass like that before! The cathedral took over 800 years to build as they kept making additions to the original structure and they still hold regular mass services.

After spending a few quiet, reflective moments in the sanctuary, we went out in search of our last Parisian dinner. The night prior, at Le Parvis, I was adventurous in trying the escargot; something Daniel had eaten before. I admit, it was pretty good... for a snail. So, tonight was Daniel's night to branch out. He was skeptical at first, but the carpaccio was delish and we followed that up with an amazing entree of duck breast. The Grizzli Cafe  is definitely at the top of our list!

After dinner, we thought we would call it a night since we had to get up early to catch a train to Switzerland. Little did we know, the opening game of the 2016 Eurocup (which France won btw) would have football fans chanting and celebrating in the streets ALL night. It was pretty amazing actually.

We first arrived in Paris feeling timid, vulnerable, and a bit out of place. We left Paris with a great sense of camaraderie, unity, and humble appreciation for this beautiful city.

Eurotrip Day 2

Ireland is amazing. I can barely keep my eyes open as I type this, but I have to tell you about the incredible day we've had! Our first views of Ireland from our plane were enough to snap us out of our sleep deprived trance. It was a clear day and the view just after the sunrise was breathtaking. It's every bit as green as they say!

It was too early to check into our apartment, so we hopped in the rental car and drove (on the wrong  left side of the road) to the city to meet up with friends. We decided to grab breakfast at a friendly little cafe called Cowtown where the french eggy toast and white pudding hit the spot and the coffee perked us up for our next excursion.

The Guinness Storehouse tour was a lot of fun. We had a fresh draught on the top floor 'gravity bar' overlooking the city and even bought a few souvenirs from the gift shop to take back home.

When we left Guinness, we decided to explore the rest of the city on foot. In total, we probably walked about 8 miles on about 4 hours of sleep today. Totally worth it.

Unfortunately, we did not get to see Kilmainham Gaol. It was completely booked up during our entire stay. Who knew you needed reservations to see an old prison! Take note, people!

Our AirBnb was ready for check in by 3pm, so we wandered that way to unload and regroup. It doesn't get dark in Ireland until well after 10pm, so we had plenty of daylight left. After thumbing through a few informational brochures we discovered there was a beach, not too far from us, where seals often visit. SEALS. They had us at seals, so we loaded up in the car for another scenic drive.

Forty-Foot Beach wasn't at all what we expected, but it was beautiful! Even with no sand, and sadly no seals, this was a very happening spot for locals and tourists alike. We enjoyed the view of the water from a safe, warm distance.

On our way back to the car, we spotted an ice cream truck. The eight year old in me will never just walk by an ice cream truck.

If you were wondering, it was delicious.

At this point we were starving for some real food, so we headed back to Dublin for a steak and fries dinner at a local pub.

A busy and exhausting first day, but we managed to stay awake long enough to get over any jet lag and we made some great memories.

Eurotrip Day 1

Eurotrip Day 1

So far so good. Daniel's fear of flying has been held at bay and the first leg of our trip, bna>lga, wasn't bad at all. We are tired but determined to stay awake so we can hit the ground running in Dublin.

{Sidenote: I realized that we are crossing multiple timezones during our trip and I was sure to make note of all of our arrival and departure times, but didn't list how long each flight was. It's something to note when creating your itineraries, if you are annoyingly over-organized like myself and don't want to have to figure it out along the way.}

Any who, we are sitting in the LGA airport, drinking coffee, charging our phones, and hoping they don't force us to check our bags because our next flight is FULL. Also, someone in this terminal keeps farting and the germophobe in me can't decide if it's better to just deal with it or to breathe through my mouth in this crowded airport. Better here than on the plane, I guess.

To be continued during our layover in Toronto...

Continued:
I have no idea what time it is. We just landed in St John's for the final leg of our flight to Dublin. It's dark outside, but that doesn't mean much. Daniel thinks we may be able to see the Northern lights from our plane tonight. I don't plan on seeing anything except the backs of my eyelids, so hopefully it's common courtesy for the flight attendants to wake the tourists for potential bucket-list-checking.

Speaking of bucket lists, hello St Johns?! Aside from the fact that it's 4 degrees outside... and dark... this place seems pretty awesome. Canadians call it 'the rock'. From the plane it looks like a mini Ireland. This may be added to our list of places to visit, even if the customs line in Toronto took For.Ev.Er. today.

Blogging from here on out may be a little sparse, but we will definitely keep you filled in when we have wifi. For now, I'll leave you with a few phone shots:

Prepping For The Time Change

The Prior to Departure Checklist

Our big trip is almost here! (Six more weeks?!) Time to get everything together and finalize any last minute details, so we thought we would put together a list of things that should be squared away and finalized on the home front for the time you’re away.

4-6 Weeks Prior to Departure

  •  Confirm with your pet sitter and/or house sitter if you have one lined up, to make sure you don’t have any last minute cancellations.
  •  If someone is staying in your home, be sure to get some groceries/cash for your sitter beforehand, to make sure they’re happy being there for the duration of your trip.
  • Lock up any valuables (i.e. jewelry/guns) either in a safe or a safety deposit box. Maybe take them to a trusted friends/relatives house for safe keeping.
  • If you have pets, make sure you have enough pet food, treats, cat litter, etc. so your sitter doesn’t have to go shopping for it while you’re gone.
  • Finish any needed repairs done around your house or apartment before leaving so they don’t get worse while you’re away.  The last thing anyone wants is to come home to a puddle in the living room from a roof leak.
  • Arrange to have the postal service hold your mail for you or make sure your sitter is gathering your mail/newspapers for you while you are gone.
  • If you are going on an extended trip, set up automatic payments for your bills that may be due while you’re gone (credit cards, utilities, rent, etc.)
  • Make a copy or two of your house key, so your sitter or family can check in on your place. Don’t leave a copy outside under the mat.
  • Leave a copy of all of your travel documents and itinerary with your emergency contacts.

1 Week Prior to Departure

You'll be so glad you took care of these few things a week before you left when you get back and you’re too exhausted to do anything.
  • Gas up your vehicles before leaving so when you wake up late on your first day back to work, you won’t have to worry about it.
  • Give your home a good deep cleaning before you leave, so you can come back to a nice place.
  • Do all of your laundry before setting out. Not just what you need for your trip.  You’ll have plenty of laundry to do from your trip alone.  Why add more?
  • If you have a yard, think about pre-paying somebody to take care of your lawn for the duration of your trip. This will make it seem like someone is home and if you get them scheduled to mow right before you return, that’s just one less thing to worry about for the week you get back!
  • Call your bank and your credit card companies and notify they that you will be traveling.  The last thing anyone wants is to be overseas and have your funds frozen due to 'suspicious activity'.
  • Arrange a ride to and from the airport.
  • Make sure you have enough medication to last for the trip, enough pairs of contacts, etc.

1-2 Days Prior to Departure

  • Gather all travel documents and paperwork and make copies. Hard copies are always good, but taking a picture with your phone isn’t a bad idea either.
  • Check in for your flight and print your boarding passes.
  • Go over your checklist to make sure you have everything packed. Then make like Santa and go over it all again.
  • Especially if you don’t have a sitter, clean out the refrigerator and take out the trash. Trust me, you don’t want to come home to a house smelling like bad vegetables or sour milk.
  • Clean out your wallet/purse so that you are only taking things pertaining to your trip. (i.e. all of those old receipts, cards that you can’t use overseas, etc.)
  • Make sure all of your windows and doors are locked up.  You’d be surprised at how many people leave windows unlocked.

I’m sure there are a ton of other things we haven’t thought of yet, but take this as a rough idea of how to prepare before a big trip.  If we’re missing something or you have a good idea you’d like to add, please comment below!

Just Cruisin’

I wanted to share some throwback pictures of cruises I’ve been on in the past.  If you’re looking to travel a bit while being able to relax along the way, then taking a Cruise is definitely the way to go!  Worried about getting sea sick?  Take a look at the ships before you book a room, I’ve been in a storm while on one of their larger ships and couldn’t feel a thing.

As you can see from the picture below, Cruises are a great travel option for large groups.  Most cruise lines will give you a discount for groups of ten or more which to me means, the more the merrier!  Most cruises assign you a table that you will eat all of your sit-down meals at.  Even with a large group, if you book far enough in advance they can usually make accommodations so you can all to sit together.  I mean let’s be honest, where else can you have a DELICIOUS three course meal while traveling to your destination?  Sure beats the complimentary bag of peanuts on a plane.

While I myself have only been on the Carnival Cruise Line, there are MANY different options out there.   Most cruise lines provide a wealth of entertainment, anything from gambling in the casino once you get out into international waters, to water slides on the deck, to rock climbing walls, to live shows at night.  While I love playing Poker and Blackjack, the shows on board are phenomenal.  I’ve seen all kinds of acts including magicians, jugglers, dancers, live musicians (one of the best fiddlers I’ve ever heard), and Broadway style shows.

When you break it all down, taking a cruise gets you a lot of bang for the buck.  Just about all of the staff on these ships are top notch.  Some of the best service I’ve ever received while traveling.  And if/when you do go on a cruise sometime, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tip the crew that served you during your trip!  They have been working around the clock to make sure you’ve had the best experience possible.

The Big Ten: Our Top Ten Dream Travel Destinations

Welcome to Our Little Blog: The BIG TEN

Daniel and I are so excited to start this journey together - and to share it with you, of course! We have all of these ideas and thoughts for you, but where do we start?? What topic is worthy of our very first blog post?

Well, as they say, go BIG or go home. Here's our BIG TEN travel list. These are top 10 places we dream of travelling to. In no particular order...

10. Ireland

View towards signal tower, Bray Head, Valencia Island (Espresso Addict) / CC BY-SA 2.0

What's not to daydream about? Castles? Beaches? Vivid green landscapes as far as you can see? Not to mention culture and history. Ireland was a clear choice for our Big Ten list. As a matter of fact, we plan to cross this dream trip off of our list this summer!

9. China

Severin.stalder [CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)]
To run along the great wall of china has been at the top of the bucket-list for as long as I can remember. China is an easy Big Ten for us, with plenty of adventures and a culture thousands of years in the making.

8. Rome

Bert Kaufmann (Rome Skyline) [CC BY-SA 2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0)]
Rome is another wondrous city that we will be crossing off of our list this summer. Although, I have a feeling, we will want to go back again. We can't wait to explore the beautiful Vatican City and see the astounding architecture of the ancient Romans.

7. Brazil

The largest country in South America, Brazil is home to most of the Amazon Rain Forest, breathtaking waterfalls, gorgeous beaches, and an abundance of outdoor activities just waiting for you.

6. Bora Bora

I could die happy after visiting Bora Bora. This is a luxury honeymoon destination for many people and you can see why. The year-round average temperature is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. You can spend the days snorkeling the tropical reefs and your evenings sipping from coconuts in the sand

5. Hawaii

By Cristo Vlahos (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)
Doesn't everyone want to go to Hawaii?? I could easily mark 4 things off of my bucket list on these beautiful islands and I would do it all wearing a grass skirt.

4. Greece

Are you noticing a theme yet? We basically want to go everywhere that meets the sea. Greece definitely marks the top of that list as the birthplace of Western civilization. Also, tzatziki sauce.

3. Cinque Terre

Checking this one off of our list this summer, too! Cinque Terre may be the reason I keep trying to pack my bags early. If you don't see any more blog posts, its very likely that I just didn't come home. I can almost taste the seafood and the limoncello already. Plus, adventure is a given in a string of coastal villages that don't even have cars.

2. Australia

I'll be honest, Australia has been on my list since I was a little girl watching Crocodile Dundee. This place literally has everything: deserts (and desserts), beaches, kangaroos, waterfalls, monsoons, KOALA BEARS!!, the Great Barrier Reef, and an accent that I could listen to all day long.

1. Africa

Africa. Yes, I realize that is an entire continent. Maybe we'll just take a sabbatical! Africa has so much to offer that we can't narrow it down to one country or city. In fact, Africa deserves its own blog post (coming soon).

Now, here's the fun part - daydream with us for a minute! We want to know, what's on your BIG TEN? Have you been to any of the places on our list? Be sure to comment below!

-Amber & Daniel
